Orthobiologics

Orthobiologics, also known as regenerative medicine, is a rapidly advancing field that offers new options to treat acute orthopaedic injuries and chronic or degenerative conditions without surgery. It is one of multiple promising treatments for muscle, joint, and soft tissue injuries.

What are Orthobiologics?

Biologics are natural products which are harvested, concentrated and delivered often by injection to the site of injury or repair. It is hoped that the concentrated and targeted Biologics will enhance and accelerate healing by potentiating the bodies natural response

What are the advantages?

The benefits can include reduced inflammation, accelerated healing and remodelling of the injured tissue or joint

How does this work?

The Biologics can be obtained from various sites including bone marrow, fat or peripheral blood stream. The samples are concentrated depending on the nature of the problem. Excess waste products are discarded and the concentrate of PRP or stem cells are ready to be delivered by a small injection.

These treatments can be a good non surgical technique on its own and may compliment repair or reconstruction if required. In certain situations it can be beneficial for early arthritis.

How are biologics currently being used in orthopaedic care — for which conditions and injuries?

Because orthobiologics are still relatively new, the evidence supporting their use is limited. That said, biologic therapies have shown promise when used: To treat tendinopathies, such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) To treat pain from early arthritis, including early knee osteoarthritis, which can help delay the need for surgery

As an aid to healing after surgery to repair certain tendons, including rotator cuff repair To treat avascular necrosis (death of bone tissue resulting from temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the bone)
